Understanding the Concept of Left of Bang

by Gary Sigrist

If you were to picture a timeline, “bang” is time-zero and is in the middle of the line. Bang is whatever event you are trying to prevent from occurring. Whether it be an Active Threat, gang violence, or a student suicide we always would like to be Left of Bang. When we are right of bang, the act has already happened, and you are now reacting to event. Being right of bang could mean we missed some warning signs.

This activity is one you can take back to your organization to identify training, processes and procedures in place Left of Bang, process and procedures for responding right of bang, and any areas of improvement needed.
